The dances organized by St. Paul's Church were really great.  They gave us a place to go and it was "approved" by our parents.  We had a good time this evening at the dance . . . the Comet's were OUTSTANDING!  Dick and I are leaving with Karen and Lovey.  Still only 9:15PM and lots to do.  We're all getting in Dicko's Merc coupe with the "green door".

Karen - "So Dick!  What IS behind the green door?"   Dick -" What?" Karen - "You know the song!  "Green Door - what's that secret you're keeping?"  Dick - "Sorry Karen I'm sworn to secrecy!  You'll have to ask Harv"  Karen - "OK, Harv, what's the story!"  Lovey - "Really!  what's the big deal?"  Me - "Well, it's not a secret at all!  You will note that the green door to which you are referring, is on the driver's side.  So "Dicko'" is"behind the green door"!!!  That's all I am inclined to divulge!"  Karen/Lovey "you guys are questionable at best!  Me"Thank you, and that is the nicest thing anyone has said about us!  Right Dick?  Dick "Oh I don't know . . .  I was called "dubious" once!  Me "Both do have a certain panache!"

Dick - "How about we take a ride over to Late's and see what's happening."  All - "Great!  let's go!"  Me - Is there a shortcut?. . . . .  What?  "Already there?   Man! I always forget how close Late's is to St. Paul's Church!  What did that ride take . .  2 minutes?"  Lovey - "Gee, looks like nobodys here!  Where did everybody go?"  Karen - "well it's still pretty early what else can we do?"  Me - "Why don't we take a ride to Two Rivers - The M&M should still be open."  Lovey - "Great!  they have the best fish dinners there!"  Karen - "I'm not really very hungry Lovey, but if you'll split with me" . .  Lovey - "Great!!!  Oh!  Turn that song up!  It's one of my favorites!"
As we drive from Late's we decide to take 8th street.  So we drive from Late's, past Lincoln, and take a right - one block to Ma's and then a left onto 8th.  The downtown never changes. As we drive, we pass the Colonial Inn on the right, then Westphal's Hardware, Schuette's on the left,  there's the Capitol Theatre on the right, then Kresge's on the left and  Oh!, theFrench Slipper Shop just across the street followed by the Savoy Restaurant and now, as we cross the river, that damp smell from the river enters the car.  It's not objectionable but you certainly start thinking seagulls, fish and boats. Now Johnson Hills appears on the left, Searson the right.  Then on the left, Bernstein's, the Karmelkorn, the Manitowoc Hotel, North End Drug, and on the right the Strand Theatre.

Me - "Hey Dick! slow down!  Everyone! - watch to the right.  I think Torr's house is the first one on the right just down that side street.  There it is!  That's where our new Coachmen Car Club will be headquartered.  Our clubhouse will be in the garage.  It's got a second floor apartment where we can hold meetings.  There is a Turntable on the main level.  You drive in, park your car on the turntable, and then turn it completely around so it's facing out when you're ready to leave.  Neat huh??" Lovey - "Why would anyone put an apartment above a garage???"  Me - "Well, maybe it's where the employees lived that took care of the horses back when there were very few cars.  Most people back then owned horses and in this case, being in the city,  the horses stayed in the garage."  Lovey -"I suppose the turntable was so the horse could be turned around to face the door after it was ridden in??"  Me - "I don't know when the turntable was installed.  Times change.  Horses are out, cars are in, changes are made to accommodate all those events.  I guess things just kind of happen that way.
Dick - "Boy it's really warm tonight!  Does anyone know what the temperature is??" Karen -"According to the bank we passed back there, its 80 degrees.  That's really hot for this time of day!"  Dick - (as we are turning right onto Waldo) "Well lets see how far we get before the windows fog up! Wo! . . . not that far !.  Can't see a darn thing!"  Karen - "Wow!  one second the windshield is perfectly clear and the  next, you need to turn the windshield wipers on to see!"  Lovey - "Happens all the time to me. Living on the Lakeshore drive all these years I've seen that happen 100's of times.  Remember what they say, "Cooler by the Lake",  which to me means, "fogged up windshield"!

Me - "Lovey, tell me, where exactly do you live?"  Lovey - We'll pass the driveway for the Lake Vue Outdoor and then I'm just next, in the white house."  Dick "Isn't there a restaurant, or bar on the lake around here?  I heard it was a really nice place with a great view of Lake Michigan"  Lovey - "Yes - It is a really nice place.  The setting is so beautiful I think it should be named Cape Cod Inn but I think it's called Lake View Bar . . really not sure.  I've been there a couple of times with my parents.  Really good food and nice surroundings. We should pass it on the right side.  Oh, gee what a coincidence!  Turn it up!"
Lovey - "OK we're passing the Outdoor and my house is there on the left.  Me - "Can you really see the theater screen from your house?"  Lovey - "Yes! and very well thank you! I've seen just about every movie worth seeing at that Outdoor.  And a few pretty crappy ones too!"  Dick - "Saves a lot of money right??"  Lovey - "Yes but my method of saving is morelegal than what you guys do . . 10 guys in the car and only 2 showing at the ticket booth??? I think you do that so you have more money for beer!"  Dick/Me simultaneously;  "Oh No! it's so we can buy more popcorn!!!" Karen - "Of course!  How could we ever think anything else!"  Lovey "You guys are full of it!"

Dick - "There's the M&M - man nothing changes in Two Rivers either!"  Me - "Looks like it's still open, let's park over there."  Karen to Lovey - "Still want to split?"   Lovey-"Yes!   Me to Dick - "I'm having fish too how about you?"  Dick - "Fish! . . . Most definitely!"

The M&M Restaurant buy their perch directly from local fishermen.  They are FRESH!  Lake Michigan provides a never ending supply of fish for the entire state . .  and then some!!! Thanks to the Holy Catholic Church, Friday nite fish fries are as common as brats and beer in the summer!

Me - In the parking lot "That was really great and really didn't take that much time!  You know it's only 10:20.  This is a rare warm night for Two Rivers.  It would be a shame to  waste it going home now.  How about we go to Neshotah Park and walk the beach?  Full moon, light breeze, and warm!   It's such a lovely night, I almost expect to see banana trees out here!. How perfect is that???"  Dick  "Sounds GREAT to me!  How about you guys . . . Karen . . . Lovey??? . . .  Me - Wow! Listen to that!  Looks like this radio station has us tuned in!"
To be Continued!

Till Next Week
