HAPPY NEW YEAR! This, the last issue of "The Coachmen's Turntable" in 2013, is dedicated to Bill Ohde. Metaphorically speaking, we are all strolling down the same hallway, directly toward a new year! At the end of the hall and behind that door is 2014! . . . listen carefully . . . I think I can hear music! Time passes, things change, what's new becomes old and sometimes whats old becomes new again. Ever heard of "Flash Mobs"? Thanks to the inter-connectivity of today's electronic devices, groups of people are able to communicate everywhere in the world instantaneously. It didn't take long for the "mover shaker" crowd to organize "Flash Mobs" or "synchronizedexhibitions" which occur at preset times. They appear to be spontaneous. For example; you are walking in a mall, music starts playing and dancers emerge from the crowd, movements totally synchronized. These events may be performed in many countries around the world at the same instant! That's pretty awesome! When the music stops they melt back into the crowd. Check this out! About this time last year we created a play-list for Bill. We asked each Coachmen to pick their 5 favorite oldies to be placed in a play-list for him. Bill picked "It's all In the Game" by Tommy Edwards as his all time favorite song. So Bill, this one is for you. Till Next Week

Merry Christmas! Tomorrow is Christmas Eve. I don't know why but "movies" seem to take focus around the Holidays . . . Christmas movies that is. There are a lot of them. Really good movies. I've covered a few in the last few December turntables. Now lets listen to Kenny G and watch closely for movies I might have missed! Kenny G was born in Seattle, Washington, so either Dan or Tom might have run into him one time or another while wondering the streets there. Jerry, this may interest you . . . in 1997, Kenny G earned a place in the Guinness Book of World Records for playing the longest note ever recorded on a saxophone. Using circular breathing, Kenny G held an E-flat for 45 minutes and 47 seconds at J&R Music World in New York City As you might have guessed we're all instumental this week. Wanted to play the easy stuff. By now everyone is probably exhausted and ready for a bit of calm in their lives. Hope you're sipping a little wine while your listening. Works best for me. Talk about a "distinctive" style. Who wouldn't recognize a Floyd Cramer selection within the first 10 seconds? This week I'll leave you with an excerpt of our all time favorite Christmas Movie . . . White Christmas. White Christmas is available on "Streaming" at Netflix. If you have time, get everyone together and watch this movie this year. From Joan and I . . . "Merry Christmas!"
Till Next Week Harv Welcome John Magnusson! Nominated by Sharon Magnusson and seconded by Pete Christensen and John Harvey - Please take it from here Torr! When we were 7 years old 1949's Most Popular Christmas gifts, toys and presents: Silly Putty, Candy Land, Kewpie dolls, Cootie*, Clue** Bouncing Putty, Wind-up Clacking "Talking Teeth" I can remember looking through the Sears & Roebuck catalogue when I was a little guy. It was the last 35 or 40 pages of that book, that captured my attention for hours. Model trains, cars, planes, six guns, cowboy hats, scooters, bicycles (even skinny tire bikes) just about everything a kid could want. And . . . those pages were in color! (at lease in my mind they were) Hours and hours were spent picking toys and then changing my mind. I absolutely needed to make the right choice . . . select just the right thing quickly so I could get it on my list to Santa. There was a lot of pressure and sweat involved. Didn't want to ask for the wrong thing and have to wait a whole year to correct my mistake. PHEW!!! Being a kid is not easy! Today the intense pressure I felt as a kid is gone. Can't say I'm really happy about that. . but as a grown up things have changed. Amy Grant does the best job expressing my new, Grown Up, Christmas Wish. Jerry Leyendecker I would like to contribute to your "Turn Table" performance, which I do appreciate. The piece is entitled "The Eternal Source of Light" composed by Gerorg Frideric Handel around 1713. I placed a link below if you want to review Handel's resume as a Baroque period composer, but the piece itself is performed by two of my favorite musicians, Kathleen Battle, Soprano, and Wynton Marsalis, playing a trumpet pitched in the key of D. It is a beautiful piece of human creation, performed by the very best mankind has yet to discover. I hope that you will appreciate it's beauty as much as I do. Best regards, JL http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Frideric_Handel George Frideric Handel Bio - Wikipedia Really nice selection Jerry. I sincerely thank you for your contribution this week. Christmas 1949 - Gene Autry's recording hit No. 1 in the U.S. charts the week of Christmas 1949. The official date of its No. 1 status was for the week ending January 7, 1950, making it the first No. 1 song of the 1950s.[3] thanks wiki Presenting: Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeeer the original song. Its from the CD: Time-Life Treasury Christmas. Till Next Week
Harv Christmas is Coming. . . . soon! Dan! Always nice to hear from you. I frequently learn from your missives. For example; I did not know that "patootie" was a real word. I suggest that you refrain from using that word in public when you arrive in the Confederate South. If "heavens to betsy" is a swear word in Tennessee who knows how they'll handle "patootie" Only a couple of weeks left before Christmas. To help us get in the mood I am inlisting the help of National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. Joan & I watch this movie every year. If you don't own it I suggest you buy it! Quickly . . . it sells out early every year! Here's the intro; Not only is the movie seriously funny but educational too. For example, don't enjoy shopping? Maybe you're doing it wrong! Clark Griswald demonstrates "how to make shopping fun"!!! Christmas can be hectic with your extended family hanging out for the entire weekend. Remember, pace and grace are your best friends! I'll show you what I mean. Annoying neighbors can multiply issues at this time of year. Go ahead and let off a little steam, especially when you know that, the "Friendship Vessle" set sail long ago! Sitting down with a glass of wine or eggnog and couple of cookies is all I need to be happy during the holidays.
