E N C O R E P R E S E N T I O N Christmas is Coming. . . . soon! Only a couple of weeks left before Christmas. To help us get in the mood I am enlisting the help of National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. Joan & I watch this movie every year. If you don't own it I suggest you buy it! Quickly . . . it sells out early every year! Here's the intro; Not only is the movie seriously funny but educational too. For example, don't enjoy shopping? Maybe you're doing it wrong! Clark Griswald demonstrates "how to make shopping fun"!!! Christmas can be hectic with your extended family hanging out for the entire weekend. Remember, pace and grace are your best friends! I'll show you what I mean. Annoying neighbors can multiply issues at this time of year. But go ahead and let off a little steam, especially when you know that, the "Friendship Vessel" set sail long ago! Sitting down with a glass of wine or eggnog and couple of cookies is all I need to be happy during the holidays. How about you?
Till next Week Harv Great music is just that GREAT MUSIC! Whether it is recognized by us depends on whether it falls in our musical headlights. For example, there are many great POP singers that never get recognized by part of the population because they're interest is totally focused within a narrow field. Some so narrow (say John Denver) that they miss a host of excellent music. (as well as high-tech smartphones . . . but then I digress) No matter! Within these fields of music there are some really interesting anomalies. Let me give you an example. Take Patsy Cline for example. Patsy had a really unique voice and was extremely popular during her career. Although considered "Country" Patsy crossed platforms and became popular in the "POP" realm too. Patsy only lived until age 30. She died in a plane accident. Here's a quick snapshot. Millions of her records have sold since her death. She won awards and accolades, leading many to view her as an icon at the level of Jim Reeves, Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley. Ten years after her death, in 1973, she became the first female solo artist inducted to the Country Music Hall of Fame. In 1999, she was voted number 11 on VH1's special, The 100 Greatest Women in Rock and Roll, by members and artists of the rock industry.[6] In 2002, country music artists and industry members voted her Number One on CMT's The 40 Greatest Women of Country Music and ranked 46th in the "100 Greatest Singers of All Time" issue of Rolling Stone magazine. According to her 1973 Country Music Hall of Fame plaque, "Her heritage of timeless recordings is testimony to her artistic capacity." (Thanks WIKI) I'm sure most of you will remember this song as she was popular while we were still alive . ahhhh . in high school. So let's listen to Patsy as she sings "Crazy". Now while we all love Patsy, its interesting to note that her "voice" made a comeback through LeAnn Rimes in the early 90's. Margaret LeAnn Rimes Cibrian (born August 28, 1982),[1] known professionally as LeAnn Rimes, is an American country and pop singer. Known for her rich vocals, Rimes rose to stardom at age 13 following the release of the Bill Mack song "Blue", becoming the youngest country music star since Tanya Tucker in 1972.[2] Rimes gained national acclaim for her similarity to Patsy Cline's vocal style. When she released her sophomore studio effort in 1997, You Light Up My Life: Inspirational Songs, she moved towards country pop material, which set the trend for a string of albums released into the next decade (Thanks Wiki) Listen to LeAnn and see what you think! Lots of anomalies like this pop up over the years. We just have to look.
So what does all this mean??? Well, it could mean that if your focus is to narrow, you might miss some really interesting things. Till Next Week Harv Let's all give New Member Skip Wallen a HEARTY WELCOME to the Coachmen Club!!! Skip's email address is; [email protected]. http://spiritoftherivers.org/the-artist/ And now Skip, this is the song we play for all new members. Why "Welcome Back"? Well, it's because we see ourselves coming back to be with the kids we knew in High School. As kids return they are welcomed back by everyone already here! The Turntable
Looking for a deal better than "Black Friday" or "Cyber Monday"? Well here's one that's available all the time! Joan and I recently moved up to "Smart Phones" (in the cheapest way possible). We put together a package through Virgin Mobile - available at Radio Shack. Buy your phone outright ($95 - $250). . . that gets you a very nice phone. Suitable plans run $35 to $55 per month per phone (no contract). Includes "Unlimited Text", "Unlimited data" and "Talktime" / ($35per mo = 300min / $45per mo = 1000min / $55per mo = Unlimited) Believe me, there is a whole new world out there accessible through Smartphones. "Cartwheel" is a new smartphone"APP" offered by Target. Using their program you add discounted offers to a list within the app. Then, when you check out, you open the app, a barcode appears which is scanned at the register giving you an additional 5% to 20% off items purchased on your list There is also a "Facebook App" for your Smartphone. Take a picture of that beautiful fall scene with your Smartphone and post it on your Facebook page for everyone to enjoy. Navigation . . . Ask your phone (Voice command available on Google & Siri) to Navigate to an address you provide and you're on your way with Visual turn by turn and verbal directions to someplace in town or across country. Works just like your GPS only more up to date. Purchase Amazon "Prime"($100 per year) add Amazon "Instant Video" app and you have access to thousands of movies and documentaries (they can be watched on your cellphone, computer or Smart TV) Add the "Kindle App" from Amazon, buy a book on Amazon and you can swap reading between your iPad, computer, Kindle or smartphone. Purchase the "Audible" counterpart and now your phone will read the book to you as you travel in your car. Add the "Weatherbug" APP to your phone and you have todays weather report, a 10 day forecast and active radar profile that will let you see exactly when that rain is going to reach you Already belong to Netflix? Add the "Netflix" App to your phone and now you can watch movies on your phone while you wait at the airport or bus stop. Oh, did I mention you can make phone calls on the smartphone? You can also "TEXT". And this is what the Grandkids were excited about. "Oh Grandma, now we can "Text" you!!! Will you Text me back??? Here's the first Text from my Granddaughter Caitlin (13 years old). It's Saturday evening 8:17PM September 25th. Caitlin Hi what's up? Me Nuttin Honey! Caitlin :) (smiley face) Me :) (smiley face) Caitlin :D (laughing face) Me Nite Nite (8:22PM) Smartphones will become more and more a part of our Kids and Grandkids lives. You may be certain that it will become an important factor in our lives too! Paying for things with your cell phone will gradually become the method of choice. Early check in at hotels which include a scannable key for your room are just ahead (Mid 2015 latest). Consider getting one if you don't have one already. They're a little complicated at first but lots of fun. Good Luck!! Oh! If you think smartphones are too "techie", look below to see what else is just on the horizon! Soon you will be able to point your phone's camera at a menu written in french (or any foreign language) and read it in english on the phone's screen. Cool huh? Till Next Week Harv |
