And the answer is . . "how am I supposed to remember what I was doing in January 1959when I can't even remember what I had for breakfast"?????  -    (by the way. . . you probably had toast and coffee.  Say that next time you're asked . . . they'll leave you alone)

Listening to these songs might help you out.  Tunes are like memory trippers.  Listen to a song that activates that switch and suddenly you are in the 50's at a dance, riding in a car or diving off the raft at Pigeon Lake. What memories do these selections trigger in your mind.

Released in mid to late January 1959 . . .  one made the top 10 in January and stayed there for 5 weeks.  The other 2 made the top 10 early Feb and stayed there for 10 weeks.

'Richard Steven Valenzuela' (May 13, 1941 – February 3, 1959), known as Ritchie Valens, was an American singer, songwriter and guitarist. A rock and roll pioneer and a forefather of the Chicano rock movement, Valens' recording career lasted only eight months.[1]  On February 3, 1959, on what has become known as "The Day the Music Died", Valens died in a small-plane crash in Iowa, a tragedy that also claimed the lives of fellow musicians Buddy Holly and J. P. "The Big Bopper" Valens was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001
Lloyd Price (born March 9, 1933) is an American R&B vocalist.[1] Known as "Mr. Personality", after the name of one of his biggest million-selling hits.  Since the beginning of the Billboard Hot 100 era in 1958, Price is the longest surviving solo artist to have generated a #1 single on that chart.
Antoine "Fats" Domino Jr. (born February 26, 1928) is an American rhythm and blues and rock and roll pianist and singer-songwriter. Domino released five gold (million-copy-selling) records before 1955.[1] Domino also had 35 Top 40 American hits and has a music style based on traditional rhythm and blues ensembles of bass, piano, electric guitar, drums, and saxophone.[1]
Here are some other "memory trippers"  Port Sandy Bay,  Simmets, Timber Lodge and  Cedar Lodge . . . trigger anything???
                           They work for me!

This week the turntable belongs to Jerry Leyendecker.   Jerry wants to introduce a couple of musicians that many of us may have never heard of.  Having listened to these selections I can tell you they are GREAT! and offer a vacation from our ususal selections.

Before the first selection let me give you a brief introduction the the players;
Richard Galliano (born December 12, 1950, Cannes, Alpes-Maritimes) is a French accordionist.[1] He was drawn to music at an early age, starting with the accordion at 4,[2] influenced by his father Luciano, an accordionist originally from Italy, living in Nice.  Fascinated by this new world, Richard was amazed that the accordion had never been part of this musical adventure. In this period, Galliano won twice the first prize in the "world accordion cap competition" which took place in Spain (1966) and France (1967). In the Spanish competition, the participants' duty work was "Chaconne" by the Israeli accordionist Yehuda Oppenheimer. Galliano and Oppenheimer kept up their musical collaboration and personal friendship until Oppenheimer's death in 2012.
Wynton Learson Marsalis (born October 18, 1961) is a trumpeter, composer, teacher, music educator, and Artistic Director ofJazz at Lincoln Center in New York City, United States. Marsalis has promoted the appreciation of classical and jazz music often to young audiences. Marsalis has been awarded nine Grammys in both genres, and a jazz recording of his was the first of its kind to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music.
The next two selections include the voice of Norah Jones.  Talk about a great jazz singer Norah is tops in my book!
Norah Jones[1] (born Geetali Norah Jones Shankar; March 30, 1979) is an American singer-songwriter, musician, and actress. She is the daughter of sitar virtuoso Ravi Shankar and Sue Jones. She is Anoushka Shankar's half-sister.[2] In 2002, she launched her solo music career with the release of the commercially successful and critically acclaimed album Come Away with Me, a fusion of country music and pop with elements of jazz which was certified diamond album, selling over 26 million copies.[3] The record earned Jones five Grammy Awards, including the Album of the Year, Record of the Year, and Best New Artist.[4] Jones has won nine Grammy Awards and was 60th on Billboard magazine's artists of the 2000–2009 decade chart.[7] Throughout her career, Jones has won numerous awards and has sold more than 50 million albums worldwide.[8] Billboard named her the top jazz artist of the 2000–2009 decade.
Thank you Jerry!  I must say "I am Amazed!"Remember the Turntable belongs to you!  If you have music you would like to hear or subjects you would like to discuss please let me know.

Until Next Week

The Everly Brothers--Isaac Donald "Don" Everly (born February 1, 1937) and Phillip "Phil" Everly (January 19, 1939 – January 3, 2014)—were American country-influenced rock and roll singers, known for steel-string guitar playing and close harmony singing. The duo was elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986.

CBS News Story
It happened this week, the passing of Phil Everly from pulmonary disease at age 74. As the younger half of The Everly Brothers, he helped create rock and roll as we know it. The brothers' youthful harmonies charmed the generation that came of age in the 1950s, and inspired many of the rock music greats that followed. An appreciation now from VH1's Bill Flanagan:

Phil Everly, the fair-haired Everly Brother, died on Friday. His brother Don survives him, but this marks the end of the Everly Brothers, one of the most important acts in the history of rock and roll.
Country music was part of rock from the time Elvis walked into Sun Studios, but the Everlys introduced the high lonesome harmony sound of traditional greats like the Louvin Brothers.

It is a straight line from the Everlys to Ricky Nelson, and to Linda Ronstadt, and the Eagles. Everything we call country rock comes from the Everlys.
But that is not even their most important legacy.
In the '50s, among the many teenagers who practiced being Everly Brothers in their bedrooms were two friends in Queens named Simon and Garfunkel, and two kids from Liverpool named Lennon and McCartney.  Dick Clark initially dismissed the Beatles as "Everly Brothers imitators."

Paul McCartney said a few years ago that anytime he started to lose patience with an over-bearing fan, he thinks back to how tongue-tied he and Lennon were when they came face-to-face with the Everlys for the first time.
The Everly Brothers were the Beatles' Beatles.

When two singers from rock or country duet, they usually start with an Everly Brothers song.  In recent years we have seen it with Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, Vince Gill and Sting, Carole King and James Taylor.

Carole King & James Taylor: "Crying in the Rain" (YouTube)  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2t20w29ji3s

Norah Jones and Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day released a whole album of Everly Brothers covers.

You can argue about whether the Everlys' DNA is the most important part of rock and roll, but it is surely the sweetest,
