The Limeliters

Todays Turntable is provided at the request of our esteemed                      Coachmen Member Bob Warrens!

The Limeliters are an American folk music group, formed in July 1959 by Lou Gottlieb (bass violin/bass), Alex Hassilev (banjo/baritone), and Glenn Yarbrough(guitar/tenor).  The group was active from 1959 until 1965, when they disbanded. wiki
After a hiatus of sixteen years Yarbrough, Hassilev, and Gottlieb reunited and began performing again as The Limeliters in reunion tours. On a regular basis The Limeliters (without Yarbrough) are still active and performing. Gottlieb died in 1996 and Hassilev, the last founding member active in the group, has retired, leaving the group to carry on without any of the original members. wiki

I remember the Limeliters quite well during our HS years.  Glenn Yarbrough was one of my favorite singers.  I'm pretty sure that without Glenn the group would have gone nowhere.  As it was they didn't go far.  They were in our lives only from 1959 until 1965.

There is not a lot of original stuff on these folks.  Following is a video that is a bit long but gives you a real "look back" at the Limeliters.

Think of it as a HOOTENANNY
Bob - Thank you for your Limeliters request this week.  And thanks for the helpful tips  you send me from time to time.

Is there anything you want to say to the Club???

The Kingston Trio was one of the most prominent groups of the era's pop-folk boom that started in 1958 with the release of their first album and its hit recording of "Tom Dooley", which sold over three million copies as a single.  wiki

"The Kingston Trio'  They're great!  How many times have you heard a "New" song today with a moral, or a lesson in trust?  Listen carefully to the following selection.  The moral applies, most certainly, to more than just leaving the "bottle full" for the next weary traveller.
Dick - Thank you for your Kingston Trio request this week.  And thanks for the helpful tips  you send me from time to time.
For Example:  I can't tell you how many times this test saved me from certain disaster.  Wish I had this in high school.

Is there anything you want to say to the Club???

The Kingston Trio is an American folk and pop music group that helped launch the folk revival of the late 1950s to late 1960s. The group started as a San Francisco Bay Area nightclub act with an original lineup of Dave Guard, Bob Shane, and Nick Reynolds. It rose to international popularity, fueled by unprecedented sales of 33⅓ rpm long-playing record albums (LPs), and helped to alter the direction of popular music in the U.S.[1] wiki

On Monday May 15th Joan and I met with Dick and Marie Neuses at "Hells Kitchen" in downtown Minneapolis for Lunch.  The highlight of our lunch was Dick and I singing the Kingston Trio song "They're Rioting in Africa" (which turns out to really be titled) "The Merry Little Minute".  Oh Yes we sang it "Really Loud" . . . Joan and Marie, to their distress, could not hide . . . No Sir! . . . Here's a point Dick made. "We sang this song really loud in a restaurant and we weren't even drinking yet!"           Oh yes Dick, at our age we do lots of really silly stuff!

Camping has always had a place in my heart but never made it into my life.  Why?  Because I don't like to be damp and I don't like bugs. Well regular bugs that is.  My brother camped with his family all the time.  They could go for days camped in a tent near a lake.  Catch and clean fish for dinner.  They always thought it was a great time. Come on John and Joan!  Try it!  . . . You'll love it!!

Joan, always the pragmatist, would say. . . "Why would I go on a vacation where I do everything I do at home . . . only do it in the dirt!!"  Glad I married Joan.  She had a way of cutting right to the point.  I must say I agree!

So then comes the quest.  How do I get some of the fun out of camping without all the bad stuff?  How about the VW Camper Van?
Well as you might have guessed, after analyzing the plusses and minuses of RVs, Camper Trailers, and yes the VW Camper Van, we found that either they were too expensive or not big enough .  So we've always confined our travel to hotels.

Now we're retired and I'm thinking maybe we could take another look, maybe find a compromise.  Here's our "second look" at the VW Camper Van.

This one was bought by an English friend who recently retired.  After recording the interview and playing it back we thought, are we becoming as daffey as this guy?
Lots of money going on with the VW Camper idea.  Not a lot of space.  Seems to me we could do better in the price / space arena.

Still searching for the perfect price/space ratio in a mobile camper we looked to the "totally custom" field for ideas.  After all, we are not the only people in the world wishing for as much space as we can get for the lowest price.

The English folks get our award for the most enthusiastic, imaginative builders of "Custom" camper options. Here we find 3 English friends who set out on a (roughly) 200 mile journey to a campsite where they can enjoy an overnight in their newly crafted vehicles.

The first one attempts to add space by "building a second floor".

The second tries to add space by packing the entire camper, or in his words   Cottage,  in the back of his truck and assembling it "On Site".

The third mounts an airplane fuselage on top of the car (I'm guessing sleeping quarters only) with an entry and exit from inside the car.

Here we find them "mid trip" discussing the pros and cons of their creations.  They are about 20 miles into their 200 mile trip and finding "Issues".

Which of the camper options would you be interested in pursuing? Let me know!
If they're nothing else, the English are creative . . . Don't ya think?

Oh My!  Look at this one!  Joan may have we found the "Holy Grail" of Campers
Me "It looks perfect Joan . . . what do you think?"  Joan "I'm just curious about the price . . .  55 thousand pounds of what!"

Me "I'm not sure but it sounds like a lot.  Why don't we just scrap the whole idea of a camper and buy electric bikes!  What do you think?"

Till Next Week

I'm pretty sure I could dance just as well as the guy in that video but . . . I really don't care to gain that much weight!
