The Limeliters

Todays Turntable is provided at the request of our esteemed                      Coachmen Member Bob Warrens!

The Limeliters are an American folk music group, formed in July 1959 by Lou Gottlieb (bass violin/bass), Alex Hassilev (banjo/baritone), and Glenn Yarbrough(guitar/tenor).  The group was active from 1959 until 1965, when they disbanded. wiki
After a hiatus of sixteen years Yarbrough, Hassilev, and Gottlieb reunited and began performing again as The Limeliters in reunion tours. On a regular basis The Limeliters (without Yarbrough) are still active and performing. Gottlieb died in 1996 and Hassilev, the last founding member active in the group, has retired, leaving the group to carry on without any of the original members. wiki

I remember the Limeliters quite well during our HS years.  Glenn Yarbrough was one of my favorite singers.  I'm pretty sure that without Glenn the group would have gone nowhere.  As it was they didn't go far.  They were in our lives only from 1959 until 1965.

There is not a lot of original stuff on these folks.  Following is a video that is a bit long but gives you a real "look back" at the Limeliters.

What a great pix of Bob. By the way Harv, how do we attach pictures to our postings? See a similar question I left in the Boardroom.

Thank you Harv for another outstanding program of music from our ancient past. Thanks to Dr. Bob Warrens for his suggestion, the Limelighters were a very good group of performers from that time long ago, a little more intellectual than Bill Haley and others of that period who seemed to be obsessed with more frivolous themes. We were the first of the generation of the '60s to hit the road, for better or worse. I think we did pretty good, but we could have done better! JL
