SKIP WALLEN

I’m in Alaska for two weeks, mostly to talk with Juneau city officials about some issues with the whale sculpture, but also to set some old-time wooden hooks to try to capture a soaker halibut in Glacier Bay.  A few days ago I enjoyed casting for and catching bright-as-a-silver dollar cohos on the Kenai (KEEN-eye) River using spinners.

Alaska prices have taken me aback, even after living up here 50+ years. You’d think I’d be inured to them. It must be the sudden contrast with Manitowoc prices.  And Juneau and Anchorage are a-crawl with tourists. But I had a moment on the river that made all  worthwhile.  We were quietly drifting in smooth, blue-green glacial water, carried by the swift current along a wild shoreline.  At least two loon families were competing to be heard, all calling at once and using their whole repertoires of laughing and haunting cries.   A moment so perfect that effort was needed to hold back tears.

Here’s an image of one of the loon choral groups, an individual that ventured fairly close to the boat to check us out.
Good thoughts,

                                               FIRST THE CONVERSATION

BARB HEIMAN
Hey John

inches of snow this week ..  better inform the weather man it is the
MIDDLE OF MAY :)

best regards

barb Radandt Heiman

MY RESPONSE

Hi Barb!

Well, you're right.  Duluth got 10.5 inches of snow on Tuesday morning this week!  It was a new record for the city's largest May snowfall.  But wait!  May isn't over yet . . . is it!

By the way, I missed hearing about your vacation this year.  Always looking for something to put in PICTURESQUE!  Whatever you guys did I hope you had a fun time!

Kind Regards,

BARB
Regarding our “ vacation” HA!!  Two days before we were to leave Vero Beach Gary had a serious bike accident .. clavicle, 3 ribs, pelvis in 3 places .. ( fractures)  trauma hospital in fort pierce for a week .. 3 weeks in a rehab before we could drive him home.
He is still rehabbing .. at home ..
other than that it was great

MY INSENSITIVE RESPONSE

OUR DAUGHTERS UNEXPECTED FLORIDA VACATION! (at the nursing home in Florida!)

This was in our front yard when we arrived home March 30 th at 9:30 pm

PS - Gary says he's giving up biking for hiking! Anyone in the market for a used bike with 50,000 miles on it?

Well, on behalf of the club . . . we are glad you both are home safely too!

Gary . . . Nobody want stuff like this ever to happen.  But when it does it's comforting to know that you are surrounded by a loving family.

You'll be back on that bike before you know it . . . and your trip to Florida next year will be twice as much fun.

Sharon and John Magnusson visit the The Villages, Florida!

A real fun visit for all of us!  John and Sharon stayed with us from Saturday thru Tuesday.  On Wednesday we visited Jerry Leyendecker in Gainsville.  The time we spent together was packed as tightly with fun as we could manage.

On arriving they discovered it was my birthday.  They surprised me in the parking lot with flowers and balloons!  First time in my life I remember getting that combination on a birthday.  THANKS AGAIN!!!

OK! I'm 77 years old now! Of course the whole club (with the exception of the really good looking guy standing next to me) will turn 77 sometime this year!
Picture
Every year it's the same cake . . . well . . . kind of. There's enough chocolate in that little bugger to place a dozen people in a coma.

Gator's Restaurant on Sumpter Landing. The cute gal on the left is Judy Bergren from Mpls . . . Jeri Ganz, John and Sharon are on the other side of the table. The tower of ice cream was served with 6 spoons and it took all of that to polish it off!

John and Sharon joined us on Captain Mike's Lazy River boat tour in Dunnellon, Fl.. After the 2 hour boat tour we ate dinner at the crusty old Stumpknockers restaurant located right on the bank of the Withlacoochee River. Great blackened catfish!

A motley crew indeed! (L to R) - Jerry Leyendecker, John Magnusson, Sharon Magnusson, Joan Harvey, John Harvey and Dannyn Leyendecker. The picture was taken at "The Bama Breeze Restaurant" in Gainsville, Florida. Great food and wonderful company!

Look what I found!

Picture
Joan and I were walking around Sumpter Landing when I found this really cool Corvette.  I was taking pictures when the guy who owns the car showed up.  Oops! not a guy!  Funny how we think.  Anyway she was a cutie. Gave me all the specs . . . well . . . let her talk  Her name is Barbara Bartarf.

"It'’s a Z 51, 2015, 70,000 miles of velocity yellow with the Z 51 black trim package perfect center . . 650 horses (yes 650 horses!) Over 108 thousand list price.  We got all the warrantees plus a hundred thousand miles bumper-to-bumper including the tires. We got it polycoated. I’m not gonna tell you granddad’s price"
I'll tell you!

She paid $45,000 for it.  Not bad but if you do the math she got a 30,000 mile warranty considering the car already has 70,000 miles on it!  We could just call it a "lifetime warranty".

Here's a couple more pictures!

Never know what you're going to run into in The Villages.

By the way . . . John and Sharon Magnusson stopped by and spent a couple of days with us down here . . . Sorry they didn't get to see this car while they were here.  Sharon took a lot of pictures though.  Maybe we'll see them in an upcoming PICTURESQUE!

A RARE SNOWY DAY IN SEATTLE

    TOM WESTOVER

Ginny and I aren't looking for any sympathy from our pals in the Midwest who have just experienced some of the worst weather in perhaps a generation however, the Seattle area just got it's first snow of the season yesterday and this is what it looked like out our front door this morning.  The kids are sledding nearby by since the schools are closed including my college.   The scene is right out of a Currier and Ives picture (if you like that short of thing).  So today I going to test the ability of one of the Audi's Quattro all wheel drive system matched with it's Blizzak tires.  Wheeeeee!
