I thought I’d share the photo of this stunning bird, taken in the Hoppa crabtree outside our window. These birds used to be more common in Manitowoc and it seems to me I drew several for classmates for assignmpeents in grade school and high school. They seem not to be so common in town these days so I was happy to see one in the yard. Their niche may be being taken over by the beautiful but poorly-named red-bellied woodpeckers in this area. the photo also illustrates the tripod system (leg, leg, stiff tail) woodpeckers use to so easily scale trees.
