SKIP WALLEN I’m in Alaska for two weeks, mostly to talk with Juneau city officials about some issues with the whale sculpture, but also to set some old-time wooden hooks to try to capture a soaker halibut in Glacier Bay. A few days ago I enjoyed casting for and catching bright-as-a-silver dollar cohos on the Kenai (KEEN-eye) River using spinners. |
Alaska prices have taken me aback, even after living up here 50+ years. You’d think I’d be inured to them. It must be the sudden contrast with Manitowoc prices. And Juneau and Anchorage are a-crawl with tourists. But I had a moment on the river that made all worthwhile. We were quietly drifting in smooth, blue-green glacial water, carried by the swift current along a wild shoreline. At least two loon families were competing to be heard, all calling at once and using their whole repertoires of laughing and haunting cries. A moment so perfect that effort was needed to hold back tears.
