​The United States celebrated its Semiquincentennial—the historic 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776 on this 4th of July!

Here are the most significant elements that set this year's Fourth of July apart:

The "Salute to America 250" in Washington, D.C.:
The National Mall hosted the centerpiece of the national celebration, capped by what is recorded as the largest fireworks display in U.S. history. The display launched roughly 850,000 shells from ten different sites across the capital, including the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool and barges along the Potomac River. The Times Square Ball Drop: 
In an unprecedented move, New York City held a daytime countdown and "ball drop" in Times Square at exactly 2:00 PM ET on July 4th—marking the approximate historical moment the Declaration of Independence was officially adopted. It is the first time the iconic ball has ever dropped outside of a New Year's Eve celebration.

Sail 250 and the International Fleet Review:
A massive fleet of over 60 historic tall ships and modern warships from 30 allied nations descended upon the East Coast, creating the largest maritime gathering in U.S. history.

​ A 250-Year Time Capsule:
In Philadelphia, at Independence Mall, an official national time capsule was sealed and buried. It is explicitly scheduled to remain underground for the next 250 years, to be unearthed by future generations on July 4, 2276.
