The Whale Project Juneau Alaska

THE WHALE  A life-scale bronze sculpture of a breaching humpback whale will rise from a circular pool of water. The whale is arched backwards, spiraling in a roll to its left. About half its body length - twenty feet or more -- rises above the surface of the pool. Inertia carries the right flipper skyward as a result of the spinning breach, its tip almost as high as the whale’s snout. The left flipper meanwhile slants seaward, its tip dragging the surface.
"Here’s an artist’s (Skye Stekoll of Juneau) version of the way the whale will appear on the Juneau waterfront, based on a photo of my 24 inch high bronze maquette (study model)."  Skip

The City and Borough of Juneau Assembly has contributed the land for the sculpture and fountain at a strategic site on the downtown waterfront, recognizing that in doing so it is releasing extremely valuable property.

"This is a photo of the maquette on the large whale’s site with mountains of Douglas Island in background."  Skip

As was indicated in a previous release, the Whale Project is a work in progress.  It is scheduled to be complete sometime around July 4, 2016.  That, of course, depends on everyone cooperating.

Couple more Whale Project shots.

Picture
This shot taken about 25 miles northwest of Juneau from a boat in Lynn Fjord.  Juneau is one of only two state capitals which are not reachable by road from the “Lower 48” or the “Old Country” as Alaskans sometimes call the contiguous states.  The other capital is Honolulu, of course.   The Juneau road system runs 40 miles northwest of Juneau along the Lynn Fjord and then abruptly ends.  It runs southeast for 7 miles and then abruptly ends.  To the west is the Pacific Ocean and to the east, the Coastal Mountains.

Picture
Humpbacks bubble net feeding off Pavlov Harbor, SE Alaska.  The pleats under the whales’  lower jaws allow for great expansion of the of the gullets to allow sea water to rush in along with krill or herring or needlefish, whatever the prey,  In this shot this expansion, like an inflated balloon, is visible just under the surface on the whale to the right.  This volume of water will then be expelled through the baleen, which will filter out the prey.   The baleen is visible hanging from the upper jaw.
Picture
This shot will not be of particular interest for those who have not visited Juneau but it’s included because it shows the whale sculpture site in a pool to the lower left near where a bridge runs across to Douglas Island.  It also shows the half-mile long “Sea Walk” along the coast of the fjord from downtown Juneau (off the upper right of the photo) to the whale site and the SeaWalk’s crossing over a proposed artificial island.

"Harv, if you think this would be of interest to members feel free to send it along.  This sculpture is of a life-scale breaching humpback whale, destined for the waterfront in Juneau, Alaska, hopefully to be installed next summer by July 4.  But, who knows?  Projects like this take on a life of their own.  At least the most recent interruptions have been by disputes over whose business the whale should be closest to, rather than whether or not the whale should be done at all."

Skip!  What  a HUGE project.  I see no tools I recognize in this picture.  Many would not find that surprising!

It's amazing that a program of this magnitude could be stalled due to the self interests of bordering commercial properties.
